The Defence Attaché (DA) of Canada to Ghana, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Charles Palmer, has paid a familiarisation visit to Headquarters Southern Command, Kpeshie Ridge, on Tuesday 17 September 2024.

The visit allowed the DA to formally introduce himself to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Southern Command, Brigadier General Samuel Yeboah Asare, with the aim of fostering cohesion between the Canadian and Ghanaian Armed Forces.

Additionally, Lt Col Palmer sought to acquaint himself with the Southern Command’s setup, including deployments, roles, and operational responsibilities. Discussions centred on the mutual relations between both armies, dating back to the early days of Ghana's independence when the first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, invited Canadian military officers to help establish the Ghana Military Academy and train some of the pioneer officer batches. Other key areas discussed included training, logistics support, and intelligence sharing.

The Commanding Officer (CO) of Headquarters Southern Command (Camp), Lt Col William Opoku, delivered a presentation on the organisation and roles of the command to the DA, after which deliberations were held between the DA and staff officers of the command.
