The book My Voice, My Story by Ex Warrant Officer Class One (Ex WOI) Joseph Ashitey Hammond, a World War II veteran, has been launched at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) on Saturday 21 September 2024.

The 220-page memoir delves into a poignant narrative of personal reflections, historical testimonies, and untold stories of sacrifice, perseverance, and the enduring pursuit of peace.

The Deputy Chief of Staff (Admin), Air Vice Marshal Felix Asante, representing the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), shed light on Ex WOI Hammond's recruitment into the Ghana Armed Forces as a driver mechanic and his service in India and Burma as part of the Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF). AVM Asante highlighted Ex WOI Hammond's exceptional tactical skills and unwavering determination in the face of adversity, which led to his recognition with the 1939/45 medal and Burma stars.

He also mentioned that in acknowledgement of his heroic actions during World War II, and as a surviving member of the Gold Coast, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo bestowed upon him an honorary rank of Warrant Officer Class One on 24 August 2020.

Reviewing the book, Air Vice Marshal Felix Asante asserted that it provides valuable historical insight into the author's early life, military service, and experiences as a survivor of the Second World War.

In his remarks, the former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Honorable Nii Ayikoi Otoo, stated that the memoir serves as a reminder that history has not been a constant concept but rather a collection of experiences and memories encompassing both trials and tragedies. He noted that the book does not only honour the author but also pays tribute to the men and women who served with distinction and endured unimaginable hardships for future generations to inherit a world of peace.

Nii Okang Duamro Nmashie III, the overlord of the Teshie Traditional Area and Chairperson for the launch, emphasised Ex WOI Hammond's esteemed reputation across Commonwealth nations for his unwavering sacrifice and commitment to humanity.

Ex Warrant Officer Class One Joseph Ashitey Hammond is also the only survivor of the 28 February 1948 crossroad shooting in the Gold Coast and retired as a civil engineer from the National Construction Commission.
