Major General Matthew Essien has bid farewell to the Northern Command as he handed over Command to Brigadier General Frank Nartey Tei during a colourful sendoff ceremony held at Camp Nyohini, Tamale on Tuesday 26 March, 2024.
In his address, Maj Gen Essien stated that since he assumed office as the GOC, his focus has remained steadfast in achieving Command objectives despite the challenges.
He averred that through unity and teamwork, the command had chalked up remarkable successes with sustained deployment along the northern borders, successful conduct of exercises and efficient handling of chieftaincy disputes among others.
He expressed gratitude to the staff of Northern Command for their support during his tenure and urged them to extend same support to the new GOC.
The Guest of Honour for the occasion, Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Bismark Onwona in his remarks emphasised that the Northern Command plays vital role in the security architecture of the country and remains the heartbeat of the Ghana Army. He added that current security situation along the northern frontiers, coupled with internal security threats within the Northern Command's Area of Operation and socioeconomic emerging threats required sustained security measures.
He further congratulated the new GOC, Brigadier General Tei and expressed confidence in him to continue the legacy of his predecessor.
The Northern Regional Minister, Hon Alhassan Shani Shaibu who was the special guest also lauded Major General Essien for his dedication to duty and selfless leadership which has been instrumental in maintaining peace and stability in the region. He added that his unwavering commitment has been pivotal in warding off threats from the sahel and the Region would continue to be grateful for his service.
Prior to the sendoff parade, COAS commissioned some projects at the Headquarters Northern Command. These included a refurbished office complex, a new office block and an eagle monument for the Headquarters.
