
The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) Medical Centre has launched Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign at the Junior Rates’ Mess in Tema on Tuesday, 7 October 2025, under the theme “Education on Breast Cancer – Detect, Treat, and Defeat.”
As part of activities lined up during the launch, there would be free breast screening exercise to promote early detection and education on breast health as well as reduction of stigma associated with the disease.
In a presentation, the Station Medical Officer (SMO), Dr Manuella Ziwu, emphasized the importance of sustained public education on breast cancer, noting that awareness and early detection are crucial to reducing breast cancer mortality. She urged participants to prioritize regular screening and seek prompt medical consultation when any changes are detected.
Speaking on behalf of the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Eastern Naval Command, Commodore Solomon Asiedu-Larbi, the Guest of Honour, Commanding Officer, Naval Base Tema, Commander Wendell Fiifi Owusu, said breast cancer affects both men and women urging personnel to take screening seriously.

The Principal Nursing Officer (PNO) of Tema General Hospital, Mrs Jacqueline Oduro Akoto, delivered an in-depth educational session on the causes, prevention, and treatment of breast cancer. She emphasised the importance of compassion and sensitivity when engaging with patients, stressing that emotional support plays a key role in managing the psychological impact of the disease.
The PNO further called for stronger healthcare systems to ensure continuity of care and outlined available treatment options, including surgery, hormonal therapy, and chemotherapy.
