The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has commissioned a newly constructed accommodation block for young soldiers and a gym for the Army Ordnance Corps at El-Wak Barracks, on Wednesday 18 September 2024.
The building, named after the Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, Major General Joseph Prince Osei-Owusu, celebrates his remarkable leadership, dedication, and industry as the first Major General of the Army Ordnance Corps.
In his remarks, Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah stated that the project symbolised progress, growth and collective effort toward a common goal. He emphasised the importance of teamwork, noting that such projects showcased tremendous potential when working together toward a shared objective.
He added that the gym would also enhance personnel’s physical fitness, particularly for those unable to participate in regular training due to medical reasons.
The Commanding Officer (CO) of the Base Ordnance Depot, Colonel Godfred Perry Kofi Acheampong, mentioned that what began as an idea three years ago has come to fruition. He added that the facility would alleviate the accommodation shortfall in the service, providing a fitting home for soldiers. ‘It will be a home away from home to prepare young soldiers for vital roles in the defence of the country,’ he concluded.
