The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has directed the Military High Command to review and amend sections of the Armed Forces Regulations (AFR) to align with the requirements and demands of contemporary times.
He issued the directive during a durbar with the Defence Civilian Staff (DCS) on Tuesday 26 November 2024, at Burma Hall.
Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah highlighted the need for the AFR to include provisions that address the welfare of civilian staff, including regulations on post-retirement healthcare, educational opportunities, salary structures, family lodging allowances, and other key areas. He explained that these changes would enhance the general working conditions of civilian personnel within the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).
The CDS underscored the significance of providing retired civilian staff with access to free healthcare services, which he noted would greatly improve their quality of life after active service. He also emphasised that improved educational policies and salary arrangements would encourage civilian staff to pursue further education and training, thereby equipping them with the necessary skills to excel in their roles.
Additionally, Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah cautioned personnel against engaging in fraudulent activities, particularly recruitment scams, and urged civilians to refrain from wearing military uniforms. He encouraged all personnel to prioritise their health by adopting regular exercise and balanced diets to mitigate health challenges.
The Director General of Civilian Establishment, Brigadier General Anita Asmah, also addressed the durbar. She stressed the importance of personnel updating their records regularly to ensure continued access to benefits for themselves and their families. Brig Gen Asmah further urged personnel to enrol in and contribute to the provident fund, even though it is not mandatory for Defence Civilian Staff.
