Air Force Base Takoradi has emerged as the winner of the maiden edition of the 2 Garrison Inter-Service Mental Health Quiz, held at the Harry Seshie Drill Shed, Western Naval Command (WNC), Sekondi, on Thursday 10 October 2024.
The event was organised to commemorate World Mental Health Day and to raise awareness of the importance of prioritising mental health in the workplace.
Speaking on behalf of the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command (FOC WNC), Commodore Emmanuel Ayesu Kwafo, the Flag Officer Fleet (FOF), Commodore Samuel Ayelazono, expressed his profound gratitude to the Garrison psychologist for the initiative, aimed at helping service personnel take better care of their mental health, particularly in light of recent statistics within the military.He urged personnel to seek assistance from mental health professionals whenever they encountered psychological challenges. He also noted an increase in personnel seeking mental health services since 2021, leading to the Chief of the Defence Staff’s directive for the Therapy and Wellness Department to further sensitise personnel on the importance of maintaining sound mental health.
Commodore Ayelazono commended the contestants for their impressive performance despite the short notice for the quiz and recommended that the Garrison Psychologist consider making the event a regular feature, to remind personnel of the significance of mental health care.
The competition consisted of four stages; general knowledge of the Garrison, questions on mental health, a debate on the topic “Is it important to prioritise mental health in the workplace?” and a final round involving a scenario demonstration on mental health awareness.
At the end of the keenly contested event, Air Force Base Takoradi won with 89 points, following a tie-breaker round between the 2 Infantry Battalion( 2BN) and Western Naval Command. The 2 Infantry Battalion took second place with 88 points, while the Western Naval Command secured third place with 87 points.
The moderators for the competition were the 2 Garrison Psychologist, Naval Lieutenant Ewuradjoa Kumi-Kyereme, and the 2BN Psychologist, Mr Dacosta Wereko.
