The Commanding Officer 2 Infantry Battalion (CO 2Bn), Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Philip Tetteh Nartey has launched a campaign to mark this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day on Wednesday 10 September 2025 at 2Bn.

The month-long campaign is aimed at creating adequate awareness and promoting an open discourse on the prevention of suicide at the Unit.

Lt Col Nartey indicated that statistics have shown that there are prevalent suicide cases in our communities and are often unreported. He therefore, encouraged personnel to fully participate in the awareness campaign to identify suicidal behaviours and assured personnel of a conducive environment to enable them report suicide cases and behaviours to the appropriate professionals to help them overcome such tendencies.

The Clinical Psychologist of the 2 Medical Reception Station (2MRS), Mr Dacosta Wereko in his presentation on the theme "World Suicide Prevention Day, Creating Hope Through Action", he stated that issues pertaining to suicide is the second leading cause of death among the youth ranging from 15 to 29 years with 79 percent of worldwide cases occurring in low and middle income countries such as Ghana. He added that Ghana records about 1500 suicide cases annually.

Mr Wereko attributed suicidal behaviour and cases to factors such as lack of understanding, depression, extreme despair, shame, conflict, financial hardship amongst others. He urged personnel and families to actively support this year’s World Suicide Awareness and Prevention Campaign, stressing on the need to understand the causes of suicidal behaviour, identify warning signs, and provide timely support to individuals at risk.
