'Buffalo Soldier' makes a final journey to his maker

The late Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Arnold Hudson Quainoo (Rtd), a former Chief of the Defence Staff, fondly known as the 'Buffalo Soldier' has been laid to rest at Burma Camp on Friday 7 February 2025.

During the funeral service held at the St Catherine Catholic Church in Burma Camp, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, eulogised the late CDS, recounting the roles he played during the Liberian civil war and encouraged the emulation of selflessness and love for profession and country.

In the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) tribute read by Colonel Eric Tenadu, the service acknowledged late Gen Quainoo’s boundless discipline, exceptional skills, unwavering commitment and loyalty.

The tribute added that he played a critical role in stabilizing GAF during a politically turbulent period, which earned him the moniker 'Buffalo Soldier.'

Reverend Father LieutenantColonel (Rev Fr Lt Col) Benjamin Effah delivered a sermon on the resurrection of those who die in Christ.

Late Gen Quainoo was born on Tuesday, 5 July 1939 in Kpando in the Volta Region. After completing his military training at the Ghana Military Academy, he proceeded to the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, where he graduated in December 1962. During active service, he underwent specialized military training and was later appointed as the first Force Commander of ECOMOG, leading peacekeeping efforts in Liberia in August 1990.

He died on Monday, 2 December 2024 after a short illness while on routine treatment at the 37 military Hospital. He was finally interred at the Military Cemetery in Burma Camp

At age 85, Late Gen Quainoo (Rtd) left behind a wife and seven children.
