As part of a nationwide celebration, the 2 Garrison in conjunction with the Western Regional Coordinating Council have marked Ghana’s Independence Day Anniversary on Wednesday 06 March, 2024 at Gyandu Park, Sekondi. Speaking on the theme “Our Democracy Our Pride", the Western Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah (MP) recounted the history of Ghana from the colonial days to the struggle for independence enjoined every Ghanaian to uphold the democratic tenet in all facets of their lives. He emphasised that Ghana was a home to the youth with wealth of untapped talents in various fields. He said that their innovative thinking, energy and fresh perspectives would be harnessed to shape a brighter future for the country and encouraged them to consider entrepreneurship as a career path. Hon. Dr Okyere-Darko Mensah outlined the development agenda in the Western Region in several sectors such as education, industry, agriculture among others. The regional celebration saw three hundred (300) Personnel drawn from the Ghana Army, Navy, Air Force, Police Service, Fire Service, Immigration Service, Prisons Service, Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority and Metro Guards from Sekondi-Takoradi and Effia-Kwesimintsim Metropolitan Assemblies. Additionally, five hundred (500) participants from selected Basic and Second Cycle Institutions, as well as Women’s Group and Youth Groups were also on parade. Some students who distinguished themselves in the Basic Certificate Examinations (BECE) and West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the year 2023 were honoured with citations and cash prizes.Present at the occasion were members of the Regional Security Council, Flag Officer Fleet, Western Naval Command, Commodore Samuel Ayelaono the Metropolitan Chief Executive, Effia-Kwesimintsim, Hon. Kojo Acquah, Metropolitan Chief Executive, Sekondi- Takoradi, Hon. Abdul Mumin-Issah, Western Regional Director of Education, Mrs Felicia Agyeibea Okine.
