The United Nations Information Centre, Accra has organised a press briefing to outdoor the 2024 United Nations Military Gender Advocate Award Winner, Squadron Leader (Sqn Ldr) Sharon Mwinsote Syme of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), on Thursday 17 July 2025.

Sqn Ldr Sharon Syme was presented with an award during the 2024 International Peacekeepers Day as the UN Military Gender Advocate of the year recognising her outstanding efforts in promoting gender equality in peacekeeping.

Speaking at the event, the Acting Director General Department of Public Relations, Capt (GN) Veronica Adzo Arhin commended the awardee for her sterling performance and immense contribution to promoting gender advocacy as well projecting GAF beyond the borders of the country. She encouraged other women within GAF to emulate the example of the award winner and work towards peace building in our societies and beyond.

Sqn Ldr Sharon Syme highlighted the role of women in peacekeeping stating that the award brings forth the critical role of women in peacekeeping and their contribution to inclusive and effective Peace Operations. She emphasised how empowering women in peacekeeping leads to stronger teams, more inclusive peace processes and positive community impact.

The Military Gender Advocate Award honours military peacekeepers who integrate gender perspectives and uphold United Nations principles, including zero tolerance for sexual exploitation. With 177 nominations from eight missions, Sqn Ldr Syme was selected for her significant efforts beyond duties to integrate gender perspectives into her work, raising awareness on gender equality, and promoting inclusive environments in peacekeeping operations.
