The Force Commander (FC) of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Subramanian Mohan has paid his maiden visit to the Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT) Headquarters in Bentiu, Unity State. 

The two-day working visit from 18-19 December 2023 was to officially interact with personnel and assess their operational activities.

As part of the visit, Lt Gen Mohan held a durbar with all ranks, where he emphasised on the need for the GHANBATT to continue to prioritise operational activities to protect civilians against all forms of sexual violence. He further advised troops to desist from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA).

He commended GHANBATT 11 for their professionalism, sense of initiative and for working assiduously towards the UN mandate. He acknowledged the GHANBATT as a reliable force in the sector following its prompt reactions in Leer and Guit townships in protecting the lives of the local population, humanitarian and UN Staff who were caught up in a recent clash between two armed groups. This, he stated has earned the commendation of the local authorities, UN agencies within UNMISS and the Mission leadership.

He reminded all troops that their deployment was a divine opportunity to render noble services to the vulnerable communities in South Sudan and presented certificates of commendation to some personnel for their hard work within the period.

As part of the two-day visit, the Force Commander accompanied by the Deputy Sector Commander, Colonel Seleshi Debello and Lieutenant Colonel D Ampomah toured the Leer Company Operating Base (COB).

He commended personnel of the COB for their excellent performance and urged them continue to remain alert and resolute to protect civilians at all times. He presented a certificate of commendation to the Officer Commanding (OC) Leer COB, Major D Omane-Agyekum in recognition of his exemplary leadership, initiative and prompt response when the UN Staff were caught up in the clash between two armed groups.
