The Commanding Officer (CO) of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghana Battalion 11 (GHANBATT 11), Lieutenant Colonel Dominic Ampomah, has commended the personnel of GHANBATT for their dedicated service.

He lauded their efforts, which enabled GHANBATT to fulfil the United Nations mandate during an end-of-tour durbar held at the Battalion Headquarters (BNHQ) in Bentiu, South Sudan, on Monday 19 August 2024.

Lt Col Ampomah indicated that GHANBATT achieved its mandate in Sector Unity, which includes the Protection of Civilians (PoC) and assisting humanitarian and aid agencies in close collaboration with other UN stakeholders towards implementing UN Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 2729 (2024) in South Sudan. He noted that GHANBATT effectively dominated its assigned Area of Operational Responsibility (AoR) with continuous patrols and high-standard professional engagement activities.

The prompt and proactive response by GHANBATT’s Company Operating Base (CoB) in Leer during clashes between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO) and some SPLA-IO defectors exemplified GHANBATT’s professional discharge of its PoC responsibilities within the UNMISS mandate.

Lt Col Ampomah also highlighted GHANBATT 11's Civil-Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities, which included vaccinating and treating over 27,000 livestock of local herders for various ailments. Additional activities included providing potable water, teaching assistance, and donating stationery and sanitary pads.

He further commended GHANBATT for their initiatives and commitment, which facilitated the completion of over 50 projects during the deployment period, including the major reconstruction of the GHANBATT Post Exchange (PX) Shop in Juba.

The CO urged personnel to participate in a 3-day end-of-tour religious exercise and advised them to continue upholding high standards of discipline and professionalism.
