The Ghanaian Battalion (GHANABATT) medical team from the Level 1 hospital in Bentiu-South Sudan, led by Lieutenant Commander (Lt Cdr) Leslie Kojo Tay and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Medical Service have educated women within the Unity State on breast cancer awareness.

Speaking on behalf of the Acting Head of Field Office, Madam Lydia noted that the initiative of UNMISS to spearhead The Women’s Health Campaign reflects its collective commitment to the wellbeing and empowerment of women within UNMISS.

She added that the theme “Let’s Build Wellness Rather Than Treat Diseases” resonates with the dedication of the UN on women in the ranks not only to have access to health care but also to be equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to prioritize their wellbeing proactively.

The Campaign focuses on addressing common issues that affect women ranging from reproductive and maternal care to mental health, nutrition among others.

Lt Cdr Tay, during the launch of the campaign educated all present on self-examination, early detection symptoms and what to in order to prevent the spread of the cancer cells.

He was assisted by other health professionals from GHANBATT Level 1 Hospital who examined some participants at the launch of the campaign.

About 120 participants including women from the Mongolian Battalion, the Ghana Formed Police Unit (GHANFPU), Ghana Battalion, local UN staff and some Staff Officers at the Headquarters were present, the event was a success according to the organizers.
