GHANA OBSERVES 78TH UN DAY

A Flag-raising ceremony aimed at affirming Ghana’s continuous support for global peace has been held at the forecourt of the State House, Accra on Tuesday 24 October 2023 to commemorate the 78th UN Day celebration.

The theme for the celebration was “Accelerating Action Towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda: Ghana's contribution for a peaceful, prosperous, progressive and a sustainable future”.

Speaking on the theme, the UN Resident Coordinator to Ghana, His Excellency (HE), Charles Abani, commended Ghana for her commitment to multilateralism which has been an inspiration to the world, rekindling unity, freedom and hope for a brighter future.

HE acknowledged Ghana for demonstrating leadership in the pursuit of conflict prevention, post conflict reconstruction, strengthening of Governance and enhancing global peace and security for sustainable and inclusive development, particularly, on the African continent.

He indicated that through the Accra Initiative, Ghana has demonstrated exceptional leadership which has given the country a ticket to host the upcoming UN Peace Ministerial Summit in December 2023.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Honourable (Hon) Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey lauded UN for ensuring that even the weakest member states were supported with the requisite resources to tackle the effects of climate change, gender equality and issues of human rights amongst others.

She noted that the theme for the celebration encapsulated the potential ideals of peace, progress and sustainability, a requirement for the survival of member states in rebuilding trust and rejuvenating solidarity as well as accelerating actions towards the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda.

The Minister referred to the address of the President and Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during at the 78th UN General Assembly and stated that Ghana was making progress with the hope of achieving 30% target of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

During the ceremony, the United Nations Resident Coordinator to Ghana, His Excellency Charles Abani and the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey hoisted the United Nations and Ghana flags, respectively.
