Defence Minister Affirms Continued Support for GAF

The Minister for Defence, Honourable Dr Edward Omane Boamah has reiterated government commitment to retool the Ghana Armed Forces(GAF)to safeguard national interest.

He made the statement on Thursday 17 July 2025 during a working visit to the Units under 1 Garrison to evaluate operational readiness, infrastructure, welfare and logistical challenges affecting military effectiveness.

Dr Boamah emphasized the need for stringent professionalism and accountability, stating that a high standard of discipline and professionalism was expected of the Ghana Armed Forces.

He urged the personnel to adhere to regulations regarding guard duties and cautioned them to guard against unauthorised deployments.

 He disclosed plans to expand manpower, construct 10,000 new housing units, and complete stalled accommodation projects to address the current housing shortfall, as well as replace outdated vehicles to enhance troop mobility and operational efficiency.

The minister also advocated for the introduction of solar energy alongside conventional generators to enhance surveillance.

He also mentioned the introduction of the Mahama Care Foundation, which aims to provide financial assistance for critical health necessities, including dialysis and emergency surgeries, for personnel  including veterans.

The 1 Garrison Commander and Flag Officer Commanding the ENC, Commodore Solomon Asiedu-Larbi, underscored the significance of the Minister's engagement, describing it as an indication of the government's interest in the operation and welfare of the Ghana Armed Forces. He expressed anticipation that the visit would lead to substantial support for enhancing infrastructure and the strategic operational presence.

Among the units visited were the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), 1 Infantry Battalion (1BN), 851 Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Regiment, Base Ammunition Depot (BAD) and the Army Recruit Training School at Shai Hills.
