The former Commandant, Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Major General (Maj Gen) Bismarck Kwasi Onwona has taken over as the new Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) on Wednesday, 31 January 2024. He took over from Maj Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah during a handing and taking over ceremony at the forecourt of the Ghana Army Headquarters. The former COAS, Maj Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah, expressed gratitude to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the confidence reposed in him by appointing him as the Army Commander. He was grateful to Officers, Men and Defence Civilian Staff of the Ghana Army for their support and prayers which made it possible for the Service to make great strides during his tenure. He was hopeful the same support and prayers would be extended to his successor, Maj Gen Onwona in order for him to lead the Ghana Army to a desired . In a show of appreciation to the former COAS for his development and expansion, the Army Headquarters presented a citation, 5.0 Horsepower Air Conditioner and other gifts.
