The Commanding Officer (CO) of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 12, Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Godfred Asampong has officially assumed command on Friday 27 September 2024, at GHANBATT Headquarters in Bentiu, South Sudan.

The Guest of Honour, Sector Unity Commander, Brigadier General William Ryarasa, commended GHANBATT 11 for their commitment and professionalism during their one-year tour of duty. He welcomed Lieutenant Colonel Godfred Asampong and the personnel of GHANBATT 12 to their new area of responsibility and encouraged them to continue the exemplary work of their predecessors.

The outgoing Commanding Officer, Colonel Dominic Ampomah, expressed his gratitude to all ranks for their support and prayers throughout the tour of duty. He urged the incoming Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Asampong, to uphold and build on the achievements of his predecessors in South Sudan. Colonel Ampomah also advised GHANBATT 12 to maintain strong collaboration with Sector Headquarters, neighbouring Commanding Officers, and mission area partners.

In response, Lieutenant Colonel Godfred Asampong thanked the outgoing Commanding Officer for the warm reception and assured the UNMISS leadership of GHANBATT 12’s readiness to work towards fulfilling the mission's mandate.

The ceremony concluded with the signing of the handing and taking over certificates, the handing over of the United Nations flag, the unveiling of the GHANBATT 12 logo, and the hoisting of the GHANBATT 12 flag.
