The Northern Region joined the rest of Ghanaians to mark the 67th Independence Day anniversary with a colourful parade at the Jubilee Park in Tamale on Wednesday 6 March, 2024.On parade were 8 contingents drawn from the 6 Infantry Battalion, 69 Airborne Force, Air Force, Police Service, Prisons Service, National Fire Service, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority and Immigration Service. There were also six school cadet contingents and 26 basic and secondary schools as well as some voluntary organisations from the Tamale Metropolis. In his anniversary address, the Northern Regional Minister, Hon Alhassan Shani Shaibu said it was important to renew one’s commitment to the ideals of sacrifice, dedication to national duty and commitment to service for communities and the country.He averred that the security services were poised to ensure peaceful general elections and entreated all to play their part to that end. He further called on the traditional authorities and religious leaders to use their esteem positions to preach peace at all times. The British Counsellor to the British High Commissioner, Paul Edwards advised Ghanaians to build democracy on an understanding that power was ultimately in the hands of the citizens and those in power have the obligation to ensure free and fair elections. The anniversary parade which was under the theme, “Our Democracy, Our Pride” also featured a display of some equipment utilised by Units under the Command to help bolster operations in the 5 Northern Regions. In attendance were the Garrison Commander, Major General Matthew Essien, the Air Force Base Commander Tamale, Air Commodore Joshua Mensah-Larkai, other Senior Officers within the Garrison, heads of other security services in the region, diplomats and traditional rulers.
