The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has honoured the memories of veterans during the 79th Remembrance Day Commemoration held at the Christiansborg War Cemetery in Accra on Monday 11 November 2024.
The ceremony featured a quarter guard, a solemn parade by veterans, a moment of silence to remember fallen heroes, and the sounding of the siren at 11 a.m. The Executive Director of the Veterans Association Ghana (VAG), Captain Ben Edmund Duah (Rtd), recited the Binyon Verses, followed by the sounding of the Last Post. Wreaths were laid after a two-minute silence, with the sounding of the Reveille symbolising respect and gratitude for veterans’ contributions throughout Ghana’s history.
The Guest of Honour for the ceremony, Honourable Albert Kan-Dapaah, Minister of National Security, represented the President and Commander-in-Chief of the GAF, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, and laid the first wreath at the Cenotaph on behalf of Ghana. The British High Commissioner, Madam Harriet Thompson, laid the second wreath for the Commonwealth and Allied Countries, while the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, His Excellency Maher Kheir, laid the third wreath on behalf of the Diplomatic Community.
The Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, laid the fourth wreath on behalf of GAF and other security agencies. The Chairman of VAG, Major General Clayton Boanubah Yaache (Rtd), and Osu Alata Mantse of the Osu Traditional Council, Nii Kwabena Bonney V, laid the fifth and sixth wreaths, respectively.
Remembrance Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was set aside to honour soldiers from all Commonwealth states and allied countries who lost their lives in World War I. It has since become a Memorial Day for men and women who paid the ultimate price in the pursuit of global peace.
