The School of Maritime Operations (SMOPS) at the Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Nutekpor has held a closing ceremony for the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) Train-the-Trainer and Civil Basic Courses on Friday 21 November 2025.
The programme aimed at enhancing maritime law enforcement, boarding procedures and collaborative security operations within the maritime domain while preparing participants to serve as future instructors within their respective units and agencies.
UNODC Maritime Crime Programme Specialist, Lieutenant Commander Shalom Elorm Yao Morladza commended the participants for their commitment. He stressed that the training ensured a common understanding of operational procedures, improve information sharing and promote synergy during joint operations.
He encouraged the trainees to continue building networks across agencies, noting that strong professional relationships significantly enhance maritime security efforts across the Gulf of Guinea.
The Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator at the Danish Gulf of Guinea Maritime Security Programme, Mr Benjamin Antwi Serebour expressed satisfaction with the progress of training support initiatives across the sub-region.
He highlighted Denmark’s continued commitment to strengthening partner capacity, especially in areas of practical maritime enforcement, operational readiness and regional cooperation. He urged trainees to ensure that the knowledge gained would translate into improved operational results and accountability.
The Commanding Officer of SMOPS, Captain (GN) Michael Cudjoe congratulated the trainees on completing the course and acknowledged the dedication of instructors and partners who contributed to its delivery. He emphasized that SMOPS remains committed to professional military training and continues to make strides in strengthening the Ghana Navy and regional capacity in maritime security. He charged the participants to apply the lessons learned with discipline and professionalism and to represent their institutions creditably in the execution of their duties.
