The Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 12 of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has participated in the 79th United Nations (UN) Day celebration on Thursday 24 October 2024.The ceremony was held under the theme ‘Building a Better Future Tomorrow’ at the Buffer zone of the Internally Displaced Persons Camp, Bentiu. In his remarks the Advisor of Human Rights, Honourable Abraham Dak on behalf of the Unity States Governor, noted the importance of the celebration in South Sudan and further appealed to the United Nations and other Humanitarian Agencies to continue to support Internally Displaced Persons in South Sudan. He expressed his gratitude for UN’s establishment in South Sudan, acknowledging its crucial role in providing safety and protection for citizens. The Acting Head of Field Office Madam Stella Abayomi noted that the UN Day celebration serves as a reminder of the commitment of the United Nations to protect the needs and interests of current and future generations. She emphasised on the importance of collaboration between United Nations and the South Sudanese Government to facilitate developmental activities. ‘I call on the Government and people of Unity State, especially the political elites to unite towards achieving lasting peace and make this year’s National theme of UN Day Building a Better Future Together a reality’ she added. The ceremony was marked by troops drawn from GHANBATT, Mongolia Battalion, Pakistan Military Equipment Taskforce, Ghana Formed Police Unit, Vietnam Level Two and UNMISS Uniformed Personnel Team.
