As part of activities to commemorate the birth of Christ and forster unity among peacekeepers, the Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 12 of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has held Nine Lessons and Carols Service at the GHANBATT Headquarters in Bentiu on Friday 20 December 2024.
In a brief sermon, Chaplain of the Ghana Formed Police Unit, Reverend Sergeant Samuel Teye Kwao touched on the birth of Jesus Christ, emphasising the hope, love, peace, joy and light that emerged from that event. He encouraged all present to embody these virtues in their lives, serve humanity with humility and allow the joy and light of the season to fortify their spirits.
In his remarks, the Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Godfred Asampong, welcomed attendees and highlighted the event's importance. He underscored the deep significance of the gathering, reflecting on their collective mission and the strong connections formed among peacekeepers.
He emphasised that the essence of Christmas lies in selflessness, the joy of giving without expecting anything in return and the hope generated through small acts of kindness. He further acknowledged the contributions of each participant to the mission's vibrancy and success so far, praising their commitment, bravery and perseverance.
The service saw all Companies in GHANBATT showcase their carol-singing skills in a competition which was eventually won by Headquarters Company.
