Students of the Nigerian Army War College Course 8-2024, on Tuesday 11 June 2024 visited the Ministry of Defence (MOD) in Accra as part of their five-day study tour in Ghana.

Deputy Minister for Defence, Honourable (Hon) Kofi Amankwa-Manu, on behalf of the Minister for Defence, briefed the students on the topic “Defending our Natural Resources” and underscored the detrimental effects of illegal artisanal and small-scale mining on forest reserves, farmlands, water bodies, and the economy.

He highlighted government's collaborative efforts with the Ghana Armed Forces to combat illegal mining. He outlined measures to protect lands from unlawful miners as well as efforts to safeguard maritime resources from fisher folk engaged in illegal fishing techniques and commended the Ghana Navy for safeguarding Ghana’s maritime resources and oil fields.

The Director of Higher Military Studies and Inter-Agency Relations of the Nigerian Army War College, who is also the team leader, Brigadier General (Brig Gen) Olutosin Adebayo Ogunleye, , noted that the brief enlightened them on the management of Ghana’s solid minerals.

Interacting with the deputy minister, the participants and faculty members expressed gratitude for how the brief presentation gave them an in-depth knowledge of the country’s solid minerals.
