Ghana’s only surviving World War II (WWII) veteran, Ex-Warrant Officer Class I (Ex-WOI) Ashitey Hammond Joseph, has on Tuesday 29 October 2024, congratulated the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Thomas Oppong-Peprah, on his elevation and appointment to the highest office of the Chief of Defence Staff.

Ex-WOI Ashitey praised Lt Gen Oppong-Peprah for his exemplary leadership and used the occasion to present his memoir titled “My Voice My Story” to him. The renowned WWII veteran, and winner of the Commonwealth Points of Light award, also requested the CDS to chair the sod-cutting ceremony for his upcoming hospital project at Burma Camp.

The CDS expressed gratitude for the visit, commending Ex-WOI Ashitey as a unique individual with outstanding military ethics. He assured the veteran of his full support for the successful completion of the hospital project and urged officers and soldiers to emulate Ex-WOI Ashitey’s remarkable character.
