Colonel Richard Danso Nimako has launched a book titled Africa’s Environment in Peril: A Glimpse at Ghana’s Reclamation Effort on Thursday, 31 October 2024, at the Burma Hall, Burma Camp.

The Director General of Training at the General Headquarters, Brigadier General Winfred Dzandu-Heididor, spoke on behalf of the Chief of the Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, addressing the environmental damage caused by human activities, including illegal mining, overgrazing, sand winning, and overpopulation. He highlighted the constitutional duty of soldiers to protect both the sovereignty of the country and the environment.

The Chairman of the event, Mr. Joseph Forson, emphasised the severe threats environmental degradation poses to Ghana, noting that illegal mining has contributed to a decline in cocoa production. He encouraged the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) to engage in research, publish works, and contribute to discussions on environmental matters, expanding their focus beyond traditional security issues.

The Special Guest, the Chief of Atiwa, Osabarima Dr. Owusu Beyeeman, cautioned against investing in illegal mining, advocating instead for investments in modern agricultural technology.

In his review of the book, Colonel Nimako, the author mentioned that the publication was made possible with the assistance of a friend—a geographer with extensive research in environmental issues. He underscored the critical importance of the environment for all living and non-living things.
