The Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona, has commissioned a four-bedroom accommodation at Idris Barracks and re-opened the 4 Garrison Officers Mess Matambo at Danyame in Kumasi on Friday 18 October 2024.
The new accommodation block was constructed following a fire that destroyed an old wooden structure which previously housed soldiers. The Officers Mess Matambo had been closed for renovation due to deterioration.
The COAS, who was the Guest of Honour for the commissioning, stated that his primary concern since assuming office had been to improve accommodation for soldiers. He expressed his delight at the completion of the facility and reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the accommodation needs of the Ghana Army.
The COAS indicated that efforts are being made to reduce accommodation challenges through the introduction of Quick Impact Projects (QIP) to ensure that young soldiers are housed within the various Garrisons. He also charged the occupants of the building to avoid any acts that could result in a fire outbreak.
On the 2024 general elections, Major General Onwona warned personnel to avoid any acts of unprofessional conduct before, during and after the elections. He emphasized the need for personnel to remain apolitical and focus on their professional duties.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Central Command, Brigadier General Michael Kwadwo Opoku, thanked the COAS and all stakeholders who contributed towards the completion of the accommodation and pledged to continue working hard to ensure that personnel under his command are housed in a more conducive environment.
