Ghana has reinforced its commitment to global peace with a flag-raising ceremony at the State House, Accra, to mark the 79th United Nations Day on Thursday 24 October 2024.
The parade led by the Ghana Army and the Armed Forces Central Band aims to promote peace and sustainable development in Ghana for present and future generations.
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representative Dr Wilfred Orchan speaking on behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Mr Charles Abani, emphasised the need for sustainable development goals in the area of food security, job creation, social protection, energy access, digital connectivity and education. He stressed the importance of peace, especially with Ghana's upcoming December elections.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, on behalf of Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Hon Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, praised the United Nations for its support in addressing issues related to climate change, education, energy access, sustainability, and human rights among vulnerable member states.
He reaffirmed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's commitment to the importance of peace, describing it as a non-negotiable principle that must be practiced before, during, and after the December elections.
The event was attended by heads of UN agencies, members of the diplomatic community, and senior security officers from the Ghana Armed Forces, Police Service, Prison Service, Fire Service and Immigration Service.
