The Ghana Armed Forces Health Services (GAFHS) has launched a campaign at the Burma Hall in Burma Camp to mark this year’s World Breastfeeding Week on Friday 1 August 2025.
The campaign, held under the theme ‘Prioritise Breastfeeding; Create Sustainable Support Systems’, seeks to raise awareness on the importance of breastfeeding and the need to create enabling environment for the promotion of efficient breastfeeding.
The Director General Human Resource at the General Headquarters and the Guest of Honour for the launch, Air Commodore Thomas Niifio Okai, stressed on the importance of breastfeeding and said breastfeeding fosters strong emotional bond between mother and child. He described breast milk as nature’s perfect food and emphasised prioritizing it.
He called on the government to commit to providing safe rooms for breast milk expression and temporal storage at work places. He also advocated for the extention of maternity leave and introduction of lactation breaks.
A Senior Lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Food Science, University of Ghana Nutrition, Dr Agatha Ohemeng noted that breastfeeding mothers should be supported at home and at work to aid the development of both the child and mother. She urged nursing mothers to practice the universal standard six months exclusive breastfeeding to achieve optimal growth and development for their babies.
