The Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has celebrated its West African Soldiers Social Activity (WASSA) on Tuesday 16 December 2025.

The annual merry making and esprit de corps fostering activity attracted personnel and families from the 48, 49, 50, 51 Regiments, 14 Engineer Brigade, Directorate of Engineer Services (DES) and the Engineer Training School (ETS).

The Guest of Honour, former Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General (Lt Gen) Bismarck Kwasi Onwona (Rtd), commended the brigade for their unwavering loyalty and professionalism. He noted that the Engineers Corps remains a decisive pillar in both international security and national development.

He also announced a high-profiled international relief mission to be undertaken by the 48 engineer regiment following a pledge by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to provide critical humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to Jamaica.

Lt Gen Onwona lauded the successful expansion of the Engineer Brigade, highlighting the operationalisation of the 50 Engineer Regiment in Kintampo and the 51 Engineer Regiment in Tamale, describing the move as a strategic milestone in strengthening internal security architecture and regional presence.

The Guest of Honour recognised DES for its vital oversight responsibility in the construction of modern barracks in the Central and Oti Regions, for the welfare and readiness of personnel stationed in those growing security zones.

As part of the celebrations, some hardworking and deserving staff were honoured. Staff Sergeant Agyapong Prince received the Best Sapper award, while Ms Elizabeth Mensah from ETS received the Best Defence Civilian Staff award.

Additional awards were presented to pupils from the Engineer Junior High School who excelled in the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and a special citation was presented to Lt Gen Onwona (Rtd) for his contribution to the Regiment as a former Sapper.
