The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing, has broken grounds for the construction of a permanent sanctuary for the Star of the Sea Catholic Church (SSCC) at Biekro Barracks on Sunday 7 December 2025.
The event, held under the theme “For He Has Been Mindful Of My Humble State,” marks the fifth anniversary thanksgiving service of the church.
In his address, Rear Admiral Bessing highlighted that the occasion represented an important step in the spiritual journey of the church community. He emphasised that the strength of the church lies not only in its physical structure but also in the enduring faith and dedication of its members.
The CNS added that the new building would serve as a beacon of hope and a moral anchor for sailors and their families, providing spiritual support amid the unique challenges of naval service. He assured the congregation that the Naval High Command would continue to provide the necessary support to ensure the successful completion of the project.
The main celebrant, Most Reverend John Kobina Louis, Auxiliary Bishop of the Accra Archdiocese, expressed gratitude to the military leadership for providing the land and fostering an environment conducive to the growth of the church. He also commended the Flag Officer Commanding the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), Commodore Solomon Asiedu-Larbi and his predecessors for their consistent support and contributions to the development of the church community.
The ceremony was attended by senior military officials, including former FOC, ENC Commodore (Rtd) Steve Darbo, officers, ratings and members of the Catholic community.
