OPERATION PEACE TRAIL TRAINING UNDERWAY

GAF and Police personnel are undergoing training to ensure an atmosphere of peace, safety and respect during the general elections

The 6 Infantry Battalion has commenced a four-week pre-deployment training for Operation Peace Trail on Tuesday 8 October 2024.

Operation Peace Trail, a Ghana Armed Forces initiative activated every four years or as needed to ensure peace and security before, during and after general elections.

The training, held at the Justice Opoku Hall, Kamina Barracks, includes participants from the 6 Infantry Battalion, Air Force Base Tamale (AFB), 69 Airborne Force (ABF), 93 Signal Regiment and the Ghana Police Service in the Tamale Metropolis.

In a speech delivered by Wing Commander Emmanuel Larbi, Commanding Officer of the Supply Wing, AFB Tamale, on behalf of the Garrison Commander, Air Commodore Joshua Mensah-Larkai, he highlighted the vital role of the security services in ensuring a peaceful atmosphere for Ghanaians to exercise their franchise.

He described the general election as a cornerstone of democracy and a pivotal moment for the nation’s future. He also urged participants to use the training as an opportunity to refine their skills, strengthen inter-agency collaboration and remain committed to protecting Ghana’s democracy.

The General Officer Commanding Northern Command, Brigadier General Frank Nartey Tei, advised participants to work closely with sister security agencies to prevent violence, intimidation or disruptions that could affect the electoral process. He noted that topics such as Rules of Engagement, Human Rights, the Role of the Military in Democracy and the Role of the Police in the electoral process would be covered to ensure professional conduct.

The Commanding Officer of the 6 Infantry Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Jeremiah Yao Agbeko Ankuyi, emphasised the importance of preparing troops to address potential challenges during the elections and encouraged participants to engage actively in the training.

The Northern Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr Eric Winful, urged participants to learn from each other and create a united front in responding to challenges that may arise during the elections.
