The Italian Ambassador to Ghana Her Excellency Daniela d’Orlandi has paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) Vice Admiral Seth Amoama on Wednesday, 13 October 2021 at the General Headquarters, Burma Camp.
The purpose of the visit was to strengthen the already existing bilateral cooperation between the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the Italian Armed Forces and also explore new areas of mutual relations.
Ambassador Daniela expressed her country’s willingness to cooperate with Ghana in the areas of defence and security, especially the fight against piracy. She said, the Italian Navy was active in the Gulf of Guinea (GoG) to complement the efforts of countries in the Sub-Region.
She further revealed that the Italian Navy would be deploying a frigate to the GoG to enhance defense cooperation in the Sub-Region.
Vice Admiral Seth Amoama in response assured the Ambassador of GAF’s support in the defence and security cooperation. He appealed to the Ambassador to include cyber security in the joint training exercises since cyber warfare is the new tactic, and that GAF welcomes the deployment of the frigate.
The Acting Chief of Defence Intelligence, Brigadier General Abraham Yeboah Nsiah who was also present at the meeting called for collaboration between the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC), Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
The Ambassador was accompanied by the Italian Defence Attaché to Ghana, Col Michele Devastato. Also present at the meeting were the Chief of Air Staff Air Vice Marshal Frank Hanson, Chief of Staff at the General Headquarters, Major General Nicholas Peter Andoh, Director General Personnel and Administration, Air Commodore Michael Appiah-Agyekum, Military Assistant to the CDS, Captain (GN) Stephen Billins Nyam and the Acting Director GAF Public Relations, Commander Andy La-Anyane.
