The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Wednesday 2 June, 2021 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Command Mess Conference Room in Burma Camp.
The Agreement would see the Heizel School of Finance (HSF), a training school under GAF get affiliated to UPSA.
The Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama stated that the signing of the MoU demonstrates the Military High Command's desire to develop and maintain a highly educated fighting force, capable of measuring up to the standards expected of all Militaries in the world.
He also noted that since its inception in 1982, HSF remains the only institution in GAF that provides in-service training in finance and accounting related courses to personnel of GAF.
"It is imperative that personnel are trained in modern and best practices in finance and accounting. It is in this regard that the collaboration between GAF and UPSA to affiliate HSF to UPSA is most welcomed", he added.
Vice Admiral Seth Amoama further disclosed that academic and training institutions in GAF were being upgraded and their curriculums expanded to meet the contemporary challenges in all the specialised areas of the military profession. This would equip GAF personnel with adequate academic knowledge to be marketable in the job market after service with GAF.
The Defence Financial Comptroller of GAF, Brigadier General Daniel Amissah who led the initiative noted that MoU would provide access to faculty members of UPSA and individuals in GAF's community for training and advancement.
He added that the signing of the MoU meant that HSF joins other GAF institutions that were affiliated to institutions of higher learning in Ghana for the award of Diploma, Undergraduate and Masters Degrees after completion of academic courses.
The Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Abednego Amartey expressed his appreciation for the confidence that GAF had reposed in UPSA. He assured the CDS that UPSA would deliver on its mandate.
Heizel School of Finance in collaboration with UPSA under the MoU would offer courses in Diploma in Accounting, Bachelor's degree in Accounting and Finance and MBA with options in Auditing, Accounting and Finance.
