UNMISS GH8 Commissions Oppong Peprah Amenity Centre

The Commanding Officer United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghana Battalion (Ghanbatt) 8 Lt Col RK Sagoe has commissioned the Oppong-Peprah Amenity Centre at Bentiu, South Sudan on Tuesday, 25 May 2021.

The Amenity Centre, previously a Summer Hut (Matambo) was first constructed by UNMISS Ghanbatt 3 in 2015 for troops.  However, due to natural decay and harsh weather conditions, the Matambo became dilapidated hence could not serve its desired purpose. Ghanbatt 8 as part of its quest to improve the welfare needs of troops took the initiative to construct the new facility in a better stead to offer services most effectively. The new facility consists of a bar, multi-purpose shop and a TV viewing centre.

The CO disclosed that the rationale for christening the Oppong-Peprah Amenity Centre after the Chief of the Army Staff, Maj Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah was inspired by his unparalleled commitment and dedication as far as the welfare of troops, structural and developmental projects were concerned in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

He commended troops for their unflinching loyalty and hard work over the period in their professional discharge of duties and urged them to continue to uphold the pride of GAF on the peacekeeping front. He also advised troops to put the facility to good use for succeeding battalions.

The Guest of Honour for the occasion, OIC Head of Field Office (HoFO), UNMISS Bentiu, Mr Paul Ebikwo commended the CO for embarking on such a project and several other developmental works in the Camp. He advised troops to maintain the facility as it will help reduce their level of stress in the operational area.
