GAF Bids Farewell to Maj Gen Francis Vib-Sanziri

The Military High Command and personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have bid farewell to late Maj Gen Francis Vib-Sanziri during a requiem officiated by Most Rev Joseph Afrifa Agyekum at the St Catherine Catholic Church in Burma Camp on 27 June 2019.

The late Maj Gen Francis Vib-Sanziri, until his death was the Force Commander and Head of Mission for United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

The Deputy Director for Personnel Services, Lt Col Frank Gyebi Abrokwah, read the tribute on behalf of GAF and disclosed that as part of the vision of General Vib-Sanziri to transform UNDOF activities, he championed the need for an increased UNDOF footprint on the Syrian side of the mission area, as well as the Syrian Arab Republic and Israel which has made UNDOF achieve outstanding success stories in UN Peacekeeping Operations.

Lt Col Abrokwa described Maj Gen Vib-Sanziri as a veteran peacekeeper who served in challenging missions under the ambit of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and United Nations (UN) respectively. He was described as one of the few Officers who worked tirelessly under the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda (UNAMIR) in 1995 to save lives during the genocide.

Late Maj Gen Vib-Sanziri also served the ECOWAS Ceasefire Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in Liberia and the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL).

GAF expressed pride in the immense contributions of the late Maj Gen Vib-Sanziri to global peace and security which earned him numerous Peacekeeping Medals including the “Dag Hammarskjold Medal in Service of Peace” awarded him posthumously by the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres in April, 2019.

The Senior Syrian Arab Delegate, Brig Gen Mazen Ibrahim Younes, in a tribute read on behalf of the Syrian Arab Republic Government, acknowledged the role Maj Gen Vib-Sanziri played in the global peacekeeping and security in the Middle East Region.  He eulogised him as an ambassador with  humanitarian values that needed to be epitomized in the annals of GAF.

The late Major General was commissioned into the Infantry Corps of the Ghana Army in August 1985 as a Lieutenant at the Ghana Military Academy. He served with distinction in his military career at both national and international levels rising through the ranks from Lieutenant to Major General by dint of hard work.

Outside the military circles, Maj Gen Francis Vib-Sanziri also served as the Director General, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) from 2015 to 2017. He died on Friday 19 April 2019 and was survived by his wife Mrs Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri who is a Commissioner of Police (COP) and two children.

He was laid to rest at the Military Cemetery in Burma Camp.
