CDS Turns 64

A surprise birthday party was held in honour of the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lt Gen OB Akwa to commemorate his 64th birthday celebration on Friday 21 June 2019 at the Command Officers Mess in Burma camp.

The Chaplain, Covenant Family Community Church, Cantonments, Rev Dr Emmanuel Ansah prayed for God’s guidance and protection for the CDS as he  turned 64 and all present.

The Chief of Staff (COS) at the General Headquarters, Maj Gen Thomas Oppong-Peprah described the CDS as a mentor worth emulating hence the celebration.

The CDS accompanied by his wife, Mrs Dorothy Akwa, President Mess Committee (PMC), Command Officers Mess, Col Fred Ntiri and the Services Chiefs cut the birthday cake to mark the occasion.

The CDS received gifts including a frame decorated with Armed Forces symbol, a miniature helicopter and souvenirs from GHQ, Air Force and the Navy respectively.

Lt Gen OB Akwa expressed his profound gratitude to officers at the General Headquarters for the love showed him.

Born on 20 June 1955, the CDS was enlisted into the Ghana Military Academy (GMA) in October 1975 and was commissioned into the Ghana Armed Forces as a Second Lieutenant in March 1977.  He has an excellent understanding of the theory and practice of International Peace Support Operations with a wide-ranging experience in Security, Defence and Strategic Service.

He has served as the Western Brigadier/Ghanaian Contingent Commander with the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Congo (MONUSCO). He was appointed Chief of the Defence Staff by the President of the Republic of Ghana, HE Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on 20 June 2017.
