The Attention of Ghana Armed Forces has been drawn to the Monday 12 October 2020 edition of the Daily Post Newspaper with the above headline which has since gone viral on Social Media. The paper quoted the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress Party, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, claiming that the Ghana Armed Forces intends to give its military uniforms to vigilante groups of the New Patriotic Party and also to equip them with 4,000 weapons to be deployed in the Volta Region on Election Day.

Among the statements attributed to the General Secretary are that “We are aware that the government is distributing more than 4,000 weapons from state armoury to his vigilantes”, and also that “…..I am fully aware of military uniforms having been prepared so on December 7, these uniforms will be put on vigilante people to come around Volta Region in all polling stations to create problems…..”

The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to state categorically that these allegations are totally false and malicious. There is no iota of truth in them. We therefore demand a retraction of the false publication and an apology. We also urge the general public to disregard the false statements. As an institution, the GAF does not usually respond to political commentary nor engage in political discussions. However when factual inaccuracies are peddled against it, the GAF has a duty and responsibility to set the records straight. And the truth is that no weapons have been moved out of its armouries and neither have any uniforms been issued to any group as alleged.

It is hereby reiterated that GAF will continue to carry out its constitutionally-mandated roles in a robust and professional manner, regardless of the attempts to draw it into the political fray.
