The Chief of Staff (COS) of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Brigadier General Jean-Pear Fague, on Thursday, 1 October 2020, visited GHANBATT positions; Bravo Company forward position 1-21, Alpha Company, 1-20 and GHANBATT headquarters, 5-66 at Al-Qouzah.
At the UNP 5-66, the COS was welcomed with an all women’s quarter guard commanded by Lt Gifty Kumbanyela. He proceeded to inspect some of the typhoon armored vehicles, and also toured the camp to ascertain possible locations for the construction of additional accommodation for troops.
Briefing the COS and his team at the Kpeto Hall, the Commanding Officer (CO), Lt Col Frank Gyebi-Abrokwah, briefed on the possible challenges the Mission could face should Charlie Company be relocated from its current position.
According to him, there would be the need for the provision of an extra accommodation, dining hall, additional bunkers, space for vehicle parking and women’s ablution point before personnel could be relocated from 1-0A to Bravo forward position at 1-21 to ensure troops live in good conditions.
On the issue of Covid-19 infections, the CO disclosed that currently GHANBATT personnel were free from the virus, with the exception of 1, who was still receiving treatment. He was optimistic that he will recover before the last batch of GHANBATT 86 depart from the operational theater.
The COS, Brig Gen Jean-Pierre on his part, assured GHANBATT that his office was ready and willing to work to ensure troops are accommodated adequately.
He further stated plans were underway to provide personnel with lighter vehicles to enable them patrol in the villages without alarming the locals and to also avoid troops encountering road blocks.
