Lt Col RK Sagoe Assumes Command as CO UNMISS GHANBATT 8

The Commanding Officer (CO) United Nations Mission In South Sudan (UNMISS)  Ghana Battalion (GhanBatt) 7 Lt Col Antwi Awuah Darkwa has successfully handed over authority as Commanding Officer UNMISS Ghana Battalion to Lt Col Robert Henry Kwegir Sagoe on Thursday 3 September, 2020 at Bentiu in South Sudan.

The colourful ceremony was characterized by change of baton and signatures from both Officers marking the official change of command at the Battalion Headquarters at Bentiu. The occasion also saw the pulling out of Lt Col AA Darkwa who served as CO UNMISS Ghanbatt 7 from March 2019 to September 2020.

The Ghanaian Contingent Commander (Contico), Brig Gen JK Akou-Adjei who presided over the ceremony acknowledged the immeasurable commitment and contribution of Lt Col Darkwa during his tenure of office as CO Ghanbatt 7.  He also advised the incoming CO to put in maximum effort in upholding the success attained by his predecessors in the history of UNMISS.

Brig Gen JK Akou-Adjei further stated that it is prudent to apply the necessary skills acquired as a military Officer to execute tasks ahead mentioning that he has no uncertainty about the professional outlook and insightful nature of the incoming CO.

He encouraged the rapport between Command and troops of Ghanbatt 8 to help achieve the vision and the mandate of the Battalion which seeks to protect civilians in South Sudan.

Lt Col AA Darkwa said he was grateful God had taken him through a successful tour of duty adding that it was with great joy that he has handed over command successfully to his successor.

He congratulated Lt Col RK Sagoe for his well-deserved appointment and was confident God will sustain him with the strength and vision to continue with the good work he left behind.

On his part, Lt Col RK Sagoe expressed his excitement and appreciation to the Military High Command for trusting and giving him the opportunity to serve humanity and the country in a different capacity. He expressed his willingness to work together with his Staff as a team to keep up with the pace his predecessor set, to keep flying the flag of Ghana high in the Peace Keeping arena.

The outgoing CO expressed his profound gratitude to the Sector Unity Commander, Brig Gen Taef Ul Hag, Contico, Brig Gen JK Akou-Adjei, CO Formed Police Unit (FPU) Chief Superintendent of Police, Al – Meyao Abass Kwarasey, Staff Officers serving under Sector Unity and troops who served under his Command for their immense support given him when he assumed office as CO.
