The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) Ghana Independent Infantry Company 2 (GHANCOY 2) has held its Medals Presentation Parade to decorate personnel with the United Nations Medal, in recognition of their contribution towards peace and stability in South Sudan.
The parade took place at the Aweil Field Office Park on Friday, 17 July 2020.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Head of Field Office (HoFO) UNMISS Aweil Field Office, Mr Ataklti Hailu- who was the Guest of Honourand Reviewing Officer commended the Company and the Officer Commanding (OC) Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) Daniel Ampadu for leading the Company to contribute towards the attainment of the UNMISS mandate and the peace process in the Republic of South Sudan.
He added that despite some operational challenges UNMISS mission was faced with, GHANCOY did not relent in discharging their duties in the Area of Responsibility (AOR), more especially amidst the corona virus pandemic.
Mr Ataklti also recounted GHANCOY’s immense contribution to some civil institutions. He emphasized that through its’ Civil and Military Cooperation (CIMIC) activities, GHANCOY continues to win the hearts and minds of the people in South Sudan particularly Aweil.
On behalf of the Special Representative of the United Nation Secretary-General, the HoFO expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the government and the people of Ghana for the constant commitment, continuous interest and support to peacekeeping operations worldwide.
The Guest of Honour reiterated the mission’s goal of increasing female participation in all missions across the world and urged them to continue to be ambassadors for peace. He particularly commended Ghana for deploying 18 females as part of GHANCOY 2.
The Ceremony was brief yet colourful and uniquely organized with strict adherence to all the COVID-19 safety protocols. Military Observers, National and International Staff of the Aweil Field Office were in attendance.
