Lieutenant Colonel Harry Keelson has assumed office as the Commanding Officer (CO), Defence Mechanical Transport Battalion during a handing and taken over ceremony on Wednesday, July 15 2020 in Burma Camp.
He took over from the out-going Commanding Officer (CO) Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Wumbei.
In his remarks, the out-going CO thanked the Almighty Allah for a successful term in office. He was grateful to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for entrusting the unit into his hands. He noted the opportunity was well utilized and he learnt a lot during his tenure in office.
During his tenure, the unit saw various renovation projects. Amongst them are the renovation of the Unit amenity centre, a living accommodation for young soldiers, fencing of the unit wall to enhance security and completion of the unit canteen. He also constructed an ultra-modern auditorium and formed the Unit Band christened ‘Mighty Transformers Band’ among others.
It was under his tenure that the unit was tasked to provide transportation during Ghana’s 62nd and 63rd Independence Anniversary Celebration and also during the OP COVID SAFETY, when the unit supported the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in the movement of patients to various health centres across the country.
Despite the successes chalked, he enumerated some challenges that needed attention. Among this was the expansion of their fuel tanks to a higher capacity to serve as a reservoir in times of fuel shortage in Ghana.
Lt Col Wumbei said the in-coming CO was lucky to have hard working personnel who were willing and ready to work with him. He also urged him to help sustain the Unit Band which generates funds for the unit. He appealed to his successor to give the Unit armory a facelift.
He thanked his family for their support during his tenure in office, his Intake group, GMA Intake 1999 for their advice and support, his administration team and Officers, Men and Civilian Employees of the unit. He urged them to give the same support they gave him to the in-coming CO.
The Guest of Honour, Commander Support Services Brigade, Brigadier General Stanley Brian Alloh in his remarks, expressed his profound gratitude to the out-going CO for constructing a monument in honour of him.
Brig Gen Alloh advised personnel to be of good behaviour and retire with pride, than to exit with remorse. He also encouraged personnel to leave the military with good honours. He commended the out-going CO for the great work he did.
