The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) medical team at the COVID-19 treatment Center, El Wak, have delivered a 39- year-old woman of a baby boy at the center on Wednesday 3June 2020.
The woman (name withheld) who was asymptomatic, tested positive for COVID -19 and was transferred from the Sakumono Community hospital to the El Wak Treatment and Isolation Centre. She was 41 weeks pregnant (postdate) for which a caesarean section was performed on her to deliver the baby.
A team of medical specialist comprising of an Anaesthetists, Perioperatives and Surgeon performed the operation that took 45 minutes.
The centre is a field hospital serving as an auxiliary facility of the 37 Military Hospital set up as part of GAF’s contribution to the government’s fight against COVID -19. It is a complete referral hospital in the United Nation system.
The facility is under the command of Col Thomas Aquinas Gbireh with 170 medical staff trained in the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases as well as the provision of specialized health care to persons who have tested positive for COVID-19.
The mother and baby are both healthy.
