The Minister for Defence, Hon Dominic Nitiwul has on Tuesday 24 March 2020 inspected a clean-up exercise at the Agbogbloshie market a day after the national disinfection exercise.
The Defence entourage was conducted around the main market through to Old Fadama and along the main drainage that connects to the Korle lagoon by the Executive Chairman (EC) of Jospong Group of Companies, Mr Joseph Siaw Agyapong.
During the tour, Mr Agyapong enumerated some challenges regarding waste disposal in the entire market to the team. Amongst them was the indiscriminate disposal of refuse by market operators and residents as well as inadequate dumping sites etc. He also recommended some solutions such as the enforcement of bye-laws by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the creation of adequate dumping sites.
The Director-General, Joint Operations of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brig Gen Abdullai Mahama revealed that, it was the intention of the CDS through the government and the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development to summon the operators and inhabitants of the market to the clean up exercise as a result of the enormous filth in the area.
Brig Gen Abdullai said he was impressed with the new look after the clean-up exercise and further called on the District Assembly to educate the people and enforced the bye-laws to support and maintain the cleanliness of the market.
The Minister for Defence was accompanied by the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lt Gen Obed Boamah Akwa and other Senior Officers.
In all 254 all ranks drawn from the Ghana Army, Ghana Navy and the Ghana Air Force participated in the exercise.
