The President of the ECOWAS Commission, His Excellency (HE) Dr Omar Alieu Touray visited troops deployed with Ghana Company 1 (GHANCOY 1) during a courtesy call on the President of Guinea-Bissau, His Excellency Umaro Mokhtar Sissoco Embalo, who also serves as the Chairman of ECOWAS. The Tuesday 19 July 2022 visit marks the Commissioner’s maiden one to GHANCOY 1 since its insertion into the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau (ESSM-GB).

The Combat Team Commander (CT Comd), Lieutenant Colonel (Lt Col) David Korsah briefed HE Dr Omar Alieu Touray and his delegation on the security situation in GHANCOY 1’s Area of Responsibility (AOR) which he described as “calm but unpredictable”.  Lt Col Korsah outlined efforts by GHANCOY 1 to secure the Presidential Palace - static guard deployments, patrols and other joint operations with the security forces of Guinea-Bissau all in fulfilment of the Mission’s Mandate. He took the opportunity to thank authorities, including the President of the ECOWAS Commission, for their commitment towards ensuring the well-being of the Company since its insertion.

The Commission President indicated that his visit to the company was to acknowledge troops for their dedication and commitment towards the cause of ECOWAS in ensuring peace and stability in Guinea-Bissau and the sub region as a whole. He further stated that his visit was to update himself on the well-being of troops since their deployment into the mission.

HE Dr Touray toured some of the facilities of the Company and was pleased with how GHANCOY 1 had settled in so far. He commended the troops for their professionalism and expressed his appreciation to the Ghanaian contingent for the remarkable contributions they are making towards ensuring peace in Guinea-Bissau.
