NORTHERN REGIONAL MINISTER CALLS FOR PEACE IN MION

The Northern Regional Minister and Chairman of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC), Honorable Alhalji Alhassan Shani Shaibu has urged residents of the Mion District to maintain peace since it was an element of development.

He made the clarion call when he addressed the residents at the Mion Regent’s Palace and Jagrido Chief’s Palace respectively, on Wednesday 7 August 2024 following a land dispute.

Honorable Alhalji Alhassan Shani Shaibu asserted that individual conflict caused by land dispute should not degenerate into a tribal conflict.

He cautioned the media to be circumspect in their reportage and seek clarification from appropriate authorities before publishing sensitive news items.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) Northern Command, Brigadier General Frank Nartey Tei emphasised that the Military High Command was focused on aiding sister security services in maintaining peace and security within the country, and expressed concerns that such conflicts could hinder the gains made.

The Regent of Mion, His Royal Highness Mahamadu Alhassan Abdulai and Jagrido Chief, Ubor Jagri Npoagnan agreed to eschew violence and help maintain peace, unity and security in their communities.

King of the Dagbon Kingdom, Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari Gariba II, commended the REGSEC for their professionalism and swift intervention in preventing the situation from escalating.

He also called on the government to adequately equip the security services to help maintain peace.

Speaking on behalf of the Leader of the Yendi Peace Centre of the Catholic Diocese of Yendi, Reverend Gregory Dery commented on the need for the natives to seek lasting peace that would promote development of the community.
