A flag raising and wreath laying ceremony to mark the 76th United Nations Peacekeepers Day has been held at the forecourt of the State House on Wednesday, 29 May 2024 to honour past and present peacekeepers.

The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is celebrated annually to recognize the sacrifices made by UN Peacekeepers who have lost their lives in service to peace and security.

Speaking under the theme “Fit for the Future; Building Better Together”, the Guest of Honour, Minister for Defence, Honourable (Hon) Dominic Nitiwul, lauded the professionalism, bravery and dedication of peacekeepers who have sacrificed their lives serving under the United Nations flag.

He commended peacekeepers for their unwavering commitment to promoting peace and security globally. He highlighted Ghana’s dedication to the crucial role played by the United Nations in maintaining peace and security.

Hon Nitiwul urged all to reflect on the past while looking towards the future describing peacekeeping as a noble profession which requires courage, compassion and steadfast dedication.

On his part, the UN resident Coordinator Mr Charles Abani commended the tremendous contributions of Ghana and Ghanaian peacekeepers in peacekeeping missions. He expressed the commitment of the United Nations to deepen cooperation with the Ghana Armed Forces. He eulogized Ghana for being the first African country to host the Peacekeeping Ministerial Conference.
