GAF, SETAF-AFRICA HOLDS LAW OF WAR CADRE

Cadre on Law of War and Armed Conflict places emphasis on the protection of life and the need to mitigate the devastating effects of war

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and the US ARMY Southern European Task-Force-Africa (SETAF-AFRICA) have held a 5-day cadre on Law of War and Armed Conflict from 6-10 May, 2024.

The cadre which was held at the Defence Mechanical Transport Battalion Conference Room in Burma Camp, aimed to sensitize participants on the Law of War and Armed Conflict. Specific areas covered include the foundation for military operations, rule of law, military justice, administrative investigation, prosecution, detention and interrogations operations. Other areas covered were GAF and peacekeeping missions, legal basis for the use of force and the role of the operational lawyer.

The Director General Training (DG TRG), Brigadier General Winfred Dzandu-Hedidor, revealed that the cadre emphasises best practices adding  that it would enhance the protection of civilians and soldiers as well as mitigate the devastating effects of warfare.

He stated that though the use of force was permissible, it must be used judiciously and proportionately based on international law.

The Head of the SETAF-AFRICA delegation, Colonel Jason Frankenfield expressed enthusiasm about the cadre and reiterated the need for collaboration between both institutions in area of rule of law, constitutional governance, and peacekeeping operations. He expressed hope that the cadre would serve as a cardinal guiding principle for participants in their operations.
