The Deputy Minister for Defence, Honourable (Hon) Kofi Amankwa Manu, has urged governments in the sub-Saharan region to swiftly develop regulatory and legislative frameworks to combat the escalation of internet fraud.

He made this call when students and faculty members from the National Institute of Security Studies (NISS), Nigeria, visited him at his office in Accra on Wednesday, 19 June 2024.

Briefing the 23-member delegation the Deputy Minister underscored the immense potentials of Artificial Intelligence urged governments to harness this powerful tool in the fight against internet fraud and other security issues in the sub-region. He also made a case for Armed Forces in the subregion to adopt artificial intelligence to combat these increasingly sophisticated threats.


Hon Manu indicated that criminals and violent extremists utilize advanced technologies like drones to carry out their actions.

“Those behind these threats are advancing in sophistication by the hour, and if any of our nations are to counter these threats effectively, then the adoption of artificial intelligence is imperative”. He added.

Relatedly, the team visited the Ghana India Kofi Annan Centre of Excellence in ICT, where they were briefed on Artificial Intelligence in Emerging Economies.

The team also visited The Nigerian High Commission in Accra to interact with the High Commissioner and his staff.
