The Ghana Navy has held its 11th Memorial Day Parade under the theme “Sacrifice, Service, and Sovereignty: The Legacy of the Ghana Navy” on Sunday, September 14, 2025. The event, held at the Western Naval Command, Sekondi, was in remembrance of personnel who paid the ultimate price during the bombing of GNS YOGAGA. In her address, the Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang indicated that the day signified respect for traditions of resolve and vigilance and commitment to Ghana. She noted that the anniversary did not only mark the destruction to GNS Yogaga and some crew members, but also a reflection of those who died in similar circumstances. The Vice President commended the men and women of the Ghana Navy for their hardwork and continued dedicated service and pledged government’s support to retooling the Navy. She entreated personnel to work in collaboration with other maritime stakeholders to achieve their mandates. The Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Godwin Livinus Bessing mentioned that the tragic shelling of GNS YOGAGA is a reminder of the preservation of the sovereignty of Ghana. He extended his appreciation to the Vice President, the Western Naval Command and all other stakeholders for making the anniversary a success. In his welcome address, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command (FOC WNC), Commodore Samuel Ayelazono noted that the parade was a renewal of pledge to uphold the standards for which the fallen heroes laid down their lives. EX COXSWAIN OF GNS YOGAGA-1990, CPO II MORGAN ANDREW, the only survivor of the 1990 GNS YOGAGA incident read the Myhoung verse. Four wreaths were laid on behalf of the Government and the people of Ghana, Personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces and families of the fallen heroes.
